Cleopatra VII, also known as Cleopatra the Great, was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. She was born in 69 BCE and ascended to the throne in 51 BCE at the age of 18. Cleopatra’s family, the Ptolemies, were of Macedonian Greek origin and had ruled Egypt since the time of Alexander the Great.

Cleopatra’s reign was marked by political intrigue and power struggles. She initially ruled alongside her younger brother, Ptolemy XIII, but their relationship quickly deteriorated into a civil war. Cleopatra was eventually driven into exile, but with the help of Julius Caesar, she returned to Egypt and regained power.

Cleopatra’s most famous romantic relationship was with Julius Caesar, the Roman general and statesman. Their union produced a son named Caesarion. After Caesar’s assassination in 44 BCE, Cleopatra aligned herself with Mark Antony, one of Caesar’s generals, in a political and romantic alliance. Cleopatra and Mark Antony had three children together.

Cleopatra’s relationship with Mark Antony brought her into conflict with Octavian, Caesar’s adopted son and successor. In 31 BCE, Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra in the Battle of Actium. Facing capture by Octavian, Cleopatra and Antony committed suicide, and Egypt became a Roman province.

Cleopatra’s legacy is one of intrigue, beauty, and power. She is often depicted as a seductress and femme fatale, known for her intelligence, charisma, and political acumen. Her story has been immortalized in literature, plays, and films, and she remains one of history’s most iconic figures. While there are many legends and myths surrounding Cleopatra, much of her life and reign remain shrouded in mystery, and historians continue to study and debate her role in ancient history.
