Djed, or the Djed Column, is a symbol from ancient Egypt in the form of a column topped with four layers of lotus flower, a sign of “permanence” and “survival.”

We often find it written next to the name of Pharaoh, alongside the ankh, the symbol of life, and the Was scepter, the symbol of power, meaning “may he (Pharaoh) remain a living ruler forever.”

History:

Some researchers believe that the Djed pillar, which means permanence, is a representation of the backbone of Osiris.

The upper part of the column was mostly green or red, and the part standing in it was black, white, yellow, and sometimes also green.

Researchers in the past also differed in interpreting its meaning. The researcher Alan Gardiner sees it as a bundle of papyrus stems, meaning “interdependence gives strength.” Others see it as the backbone of Osiris, for permanence, stability, and power.
