History of Anubis
Anubis was one of the most prominent deities connected with death and burial practices in ancient Egypt. He was traditionally portrayed either as a jackal or as a human figure with a jackal’s head. The British Museum identifies him particularly with cemeteries and embalming, while the Metropolitan Museum of Art describes him as a protector of the necropolis who oversaw the embalming process.
His connection with funerary practices gave Anubis an important protective role. Ancient Egyptians associated him with preparing and safeguarding the deceased as they moved from earthly life toward the afterlife.
Anubis and the Weighing of the Heart
One of the best-known scenes involving Anubis appears in ancient Egyptian representations of the Weighing of the Heart.
In this judgment scene, the heart of the deceased was weighed against the symbol of Ma’at, representing truth and correct order. Surviving funerary papyri show the jackal-headed Anubis operating or supervising the balance during this important stage of the deceased’s journey.
If the judgment was successful, the deceased could continue into the afterlife and enter the company of Osiris. If the heart failed the test, it could be consumed by Ammit, the supernatural devourer shown in funerary imagery.
This imagery helped establish Anubis as an enduring symbol of protection, judgment, burial, and transition into the afterlife.
Anubis and Mummification
Anubis was also deeply associated with embalming and mummification. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that he oversaw the embalming process, while the British Museum describes him as the Egyptian god most closely connected with embalming and cemeteries.
Because preservation of the body played an important role in ancient Egyptian funerary belief, Anubis became a powerful protective figure within burial traditions.

The Egyptian Anubis Statue represents several themes strongly associated with ancient Egyptian funerary culture:
- Protection of the deceased
- Mummification and embalming
