Who Was Ramses II?

Ramses II was one of the most famous rulers of ancient Egypt and reigned during the 19th Dynasty of the New Kingdom.

Known as Ramses the Great, he ruled Egypt for approximately 66 years, from around 1279 to 1213 BC. His exceptionally long reign was marked by ambitious building projects, military campaigns, diplomacy, and extensive royal monuments.

His name became closely associated with the power and prosperity of ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom.

Ramses II and Ancient Egyptian Architecture

One of the most remarkable aspects of Ramses II’s reign was his enormous building program.

He commissioned temples, statues, monuments, and inscriptions throughout Egypt and Nubia. Some of the most famous monuments associated with him include the spectacular temples of Abu Simbel, where colossal seated statues of the pharaoh dominate the entrance.

He also contributed extensively to temple complexes such as Karnak and Luxor and built his mortuary temple, known today as the Ramesseum, near Thebes.

These monuments helped establish Ramses II as one of the most visually recognizable rulers of ancient Egypt.

Ramses II and the Battle of Kadesh

Ramses II is also famous for his military campaigns, particularly the Battle of Kadesh against the Hittite Empire.

The battle took place near the ancient city of Kadesh in what is now Syria. Ramses II led Egyptian forces against the Hittites in one of the best-documented military confrontations of the ancient world.

Although Egyptian inscriptions presented Ramses as a victorious warrior, historians generally regard the battle as having ended without a decisive victory for either side.

Years later, Egypt and the Hittite Empire established a formal peace agreement, often regarded as one of the earliest surviving international peace treaties.

Ramses the Great

Ramses II carefully promoted his image as a powerful warrior, successful ruler, and divinely favored king.

Enormous statues bearing his likeness were erected throughout Egypt, reinforcing his royal authority and ensuring that his image remained visible for generations.

His long reign, monumental architecture, military activity, diplomatic achievements, and extensive family helped make him one of the most famous pharaohs in Egyptian history.
